A PILOT DISCUSSION IN ENGLISH IN POLITICAL THEORY TEACHING

On the afternoon of June 12, 2023, implementing the Political Theory Faculty Council's plan on teaching innovation for Elitech and SIE programs using English according to the University's project, and discussing in English were piloted at the Political Economy subject.

On the afternoon of June 12, 2023, implementing the Political Theory Faculty Council's plan on teaching innovation for Elitech and SIE programs using English according to the University's project, and discussing in English were piloted at the Political Economy subject.

Teachers from the Dean’s Committee and teachers from five professional groups took part in the discussion program: Philosophy, Political Economy, Scientific Socialism, Ho Chi Minh Thought, and the History of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The discussion lasted one hour in lecturer Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung’s ICT-K67 class on the topic “Marx's Theory of Goods and Labor Power.”

The discussion is divided into three main activities: The first is the presentation of the student groups, the second is the discussion part, and the third is the lecturer's answer and conclusion on the issues raised.

Through discussion activities, students actively share their understanding of the conditions for labor power to become a commodity, as well as the two properties of goods and labor power from the standpoint of Marxist Theory. Many discussion questions were raised during the session so that students may apply Marx's Theory values to explain practical labor market problems in Vietnam and around the world.

                                                               Lecturer Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung elaborates more on the issues presented.

In addition to slide presentation techniques, the discussion also applied automatic subtitle translation techniques. With direct Vietnamese - English bilingual support, lecturers and students easily grasp the content exchanged in the discussion.

Participating in the discussion, Nguyen Ngan Ha, a student of the ICT class shared: “This is the first time we have studied Political Theory in the form of a discussion in English. I myself feel very excited because through the discussion, we have the opportunity to practice our presentation skills, improve problem-solving thinking, as well as practice communicating in English, helping our English vocab is more extensive. I expect that there will be numerous English discussion activities like this in the University’s training program

                                                             Mr. Ngo Que Lan - Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Political Theory made a remark

At the end of the session, Mr. Ngo Que Lan, the representative of the Faculty of Political said: "Participating in internationalization is an important mission of Hanoi University of Science and Technology as the leader of a group of universities in Vietnam. Therefore, looking to the future, the use of English will be more and more popular, including Political Theory subjects. In the coming time, the Faculty will also promote discussion programs in English so that students have more opportunities to improve their teamwork skills, increase their use of foreign languages and actively share knowledge.”
